That Fraction Width

The ev'ning turns into the night when hints
Of red have faded from the dark'ning sky,
That second when the plane is free of tints,
The instant breath for when the stars will cry.
So day to night and night to day, they break
The night to morn with only first a shred
Of sun that soon with greed the sky will take;
For painful hours it streaks and spreads.
That fraction width that can't be measured close,
Impermeable membrane, permanent,
To purchase time beside the stars a-gross:
The night and light are bought with gradient spent.
With dawn, so with the dusk - inverted same -
Like children who do play an endless game.
